ABOUT ME

I am a devoted wife and mother of two beautiful children whose own fitness journey came by way of default. After experiencing a major breakdown in 2011, I began exercising as part of my therapy. Little did I know that by embarking on that journey my life would transform from one of simply ‘existing’ to one so full of hope, positivity and energy, I would not believed it if I had dreamt it. With every step I took to better my physical health I experienced something even more positive psychologically.

🙏 Lifting weights makes me feel strong.

🙏Endorphin rushes make me happy.

So when I am inside my head and just can't get out I remind myself of all of the above.

You're not doing it because you want to, but because you NEED to.

MEET THE WORK IN PROGRESS.

My drinking career staggered itself along 15-20 years of my life.

It started in my late teens and ended at 41.

I medicated when emotions were too raw.

I medicated when anxiety took over.

I medicated when I was unsure.

I medicated when I was heart-broken.

I medicated when I couldn't think of any other way to deal with life.

Every time something felt 'unsettling', the booze gave me a chance to not have to face this head on.

In the process of blocking out what I couldn't handle, I also denied myself the opportunity to figure out who I really was.

I lacked clarity, objectivity and the ability to live 'outside the square'.

The truth is, I'm a true free spirit and it's honestly only been in the last couple of years that I have been able to begin to understand this side of me without my own judgement.

Feeling, seeing, doing and behaving as I should have done all along.

I still judge, but not as much.

I'm learning to love myself for all of the unique qualities that I embody, instead of criticising the fact that I don't always fit into the norm.

That's just another super-power that being SOBER has given me.

The freedom to be ME.

This is the title of my latest feature article in That's Life Magazine - Issue 42.

There were so many reasons for me to face my addiction but none more so than providing my kids with the safety and security of a Mum who has their shit together.

In recovery we talk a lot about 'doing this for yourself'.

I call bullshit on that every now and then because when you no longer care about what happens to you then sometimes you need outside incentive.

Today I am proud of me.

CAN YOU REALLY BE HAPPY WITHOUT ALCOHOL?

Hell YES!

For a start, let's get our facts straight.

Alcohol is a chemical substance that triggers a flood of dopamine, our feel good hormone. In addition to the myriad of other effects it has on the body and our neurological system, it also slows down our movement. We are calm.

We are ARTIFICIALLY in a state of bliss.

But we are not really HAPPY. It's an illusion and it's temporary.

What you do and experience sober is what creates the real joy.

For me that is:

☀️The natural rush that exercise and training gives me.

☀️The sun on my skin on a perfect day.

☀️Morning coffees and chats in bed before I start my day.

☀️Beach walks as the sun is setting.

☀️Watching my kids laugh as they chat with one another.

☀️Seeing my clients celebrate their wins.

Living each and every day to the full and not giving a second thought to the life that I left behind.

True happiness commences when you have the tough conversations with yourself; Am I really happy?

SOBER HOLIDAYS - THEY ARE THE BEST!

Pic is from my last overseas trip to Japan in January 2020, before COVID hit.

There was a time when the thought of reaching an Airport without a glass of champagne awaiting me at the lounge would have been enough to send me into a panic.

Because holidays are meant to include a shit tonne of celebrating (excuse for) with a drink, or two or three right?

I mean how can you possibly enjoy a break without the booze?

My first sober overseas holiday was Dec 2014. It was the first time that I realised that not only could I relax without the booze, but I actually enjoyed it more.

I've since travelled numerous times all alcohol free and the theme is the same.

COMPLETELY BLOODY PRESENT.

Taking in EVERY single remarkable piece of architecture, landscape, people, culture and feeling it with all of my being.

I am happiest when I am exploring and with a clear head and unaltered state of mind, the world around me fills my heart with joy.

TODAY'S TALLY - CHECKING CHARLIE 1 - JUSTINE 0

I was so in my own head at times today I could barely focus. In fact in an approximately 30 minute period I had visualised (and emotionally endured) every worst case scenario that could happen in ALL areas of my life.

One thought ran into the next and with each progression, the outcomes simply got worse.

Fear of the fear of the fear of the fkng fear.

Then add some more - FEAR!

Obsessive compulsive disorder is a heightened form of anxiety. My thoughts get trapped in a loop and ruminate.

Strategically I can challenge them and for a short period I am calm. But if I've allowed the thoughts to go for long enough, ‘Checking Charlie’ will state his case over and over until I am once again in doubt.

8 years ago, solution - DRINK.

Drink until my head is numb and my blood is no longer boiling with adrenaline.

Or when alcohol was completely out of the question, pop a Xanax or Valium.

But just make it go the fk away AND quickly.

This is no longer an option. Well, actually it is. But the fall-out from picking up a drink would create a trillion more problems than one day of falsely imagining my life is in a state of anarchy.

I've lived with this condition for as long as I remember but it has only been the last few years that I have come to accept that it is an integral and beautiful part of me that I have learnt to love and understand.

Today I sat with it. Talked about it. Trained through it. Walked with it.

Checking Charlie is still chatting, but his voice has quietened.

Tomorrow I may awake and find Charlie is still there and that's ok. I'll wish him a good morning, thank him for trying to keep me safe, but tell him that today I'd like to manage things without him.
